800 Granville Street Laneway
As a way to strengthen and re-establish Granville Street as an arts and entertainment hub and to bring people back to the core of downtown, VMF was commissioned by the DVBIA and Bonnis Properties to create an iconic music-inspired mural in the laneway behind Lennox Pub on the same block as the renowned Commodore Ballroom. The creative brief included capturing the energetic vibe of live music and a nod towards the famous musical acts who have performed at the historic Commodore venue. We curated artist, Nada Hayek for this mural. Spanning over 1200 sq feet at the corner of Granville and Robson Streets, this bright and colourful pop-culture inspired mural brings a much needed vibrancy to the downtown core and establishes a cultural turning point for the larger 800 Granville Street development project.

“Your favourite band is coming to town and chances are they’ll be performing on Granville Street. Special Guests aim to capture the lively spirit of the concerts here and to showcase some of the impressive acts that walked this path. This mural has a scrapbook-collage feel where candid shots, polaroids and used ticket stubs litter the page. Just like a scrapbook from our youth, this mural acts as an homage and public declaration of Granville Street’s importance to Vancouver’s music scene”
- Nada Hayek
Nada Hayek grew up in the suburbs where she often found herself feeling bored. Between feeding her Neopets, looking up the lyrics to Jojo's "Too Little Too Late" and stealing her sister's nail polish, she drew pictures. Most things have changed since then, except her love for drawing. Inspired by everything from post-punk album art, graphic novels, product packaging, campy films, to the novelty knick-knacks found at the thrift store, she feels a fun idea is always waiting to be found.
